# Does my destination take an apostille?

Pick the country that will receive your document. The tool tells you whether an apostille works there or the document needs consular legalization instead.

Use the tool on the [web page](https://apostilles.fyi/tools/apostille-or-legalization). It works without JavaScript.

## How to use it

1. Choose country that will receive the document.
2. Read the result.

## How it works

An apostille works only when the destination is a contracting party to the 1961 Apostille Convention. The HCCH status table listed 130 parties at its 30-VI-2026 update, checked 2026-10-07.

The five non-member options (United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia) are absent from that table, so documents for them go through consular legalization: authentication at home, then the destination's embassy or consulate.

Any other destination falls to the lookup outcome, which sends you to the HCCH status table itself, because membership changes and this list cannot hold 130 countries.

## Questions

### My destination is not in the list. What now?

Open the HCCH status table linked in the lookup result and search the country name. Members take apostilles; non-members need consular legalization.

### Does an apostille also prove my document's content is true?

No. It certifies the signature, seal and capacity of the signer only. The receiving office still judges the content.

> **Not legal advice.** Apostille Finder lists the government offices that issue apostilles and what their official pages state. It is not legal advice, and rules, hours and fees change. Confirm every detail on the official page linked in each listing before you send a document. The source note on each record shows when we last checked it.
